TIMELESS WINGS & WHEELS NEWSLETTER
February 2008
Volume 1 * Number 1

Our Mission…

is to honor military history with an emphasis on our rich, local military involvement. By working with veterans, we will instill their legacy, to our future generations through educational involvement. Timeless Wings & Wheels is committed to providing an educational and fun-filled experience that encompasses the aviation and military vehicles of the time period. Timeless Wings & Wheels is a 501©(3) Nonprofit Organization.

HISTORY OF OUR LOGO:

The tank with wings was selected as the logo to represent our museum after doing a Veteran’s History Project interview with Mr. Edward Safford. The logo was the actual nose-art on the B-17 that Mr. Safford was on with the 569th Squadron, 390th Bomb Group. Mr. Safford’s original B-17 was involved in a crash. The captain considered the replacement B-17, to fly like a tank. The flight crew came up with the picture of the flying tank and named the airplane the General Sherman.

We felt this nose-art represented the diversity we are trying to bring out in our museum. If anyone has any more history on this particular nose-art, please let us know.

VETERAN’S HISTORY PROJECT:

To date, Carole Norville, has completed five veteran’s oral history projects on behalf of the Library of Congress. If you are a member of the military that has been involved in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm or Iraq, and would consider being part of a worthwhile project, please contact Carole Norville at (386)314-4499.

MUSEUM PROGRESS:

We are currently in the process of acquiring a hangar on the south end of the New Smyrna Beach Airport property. We are currently, actively seeking Founding Members. There are several membership categories available. For any membership information, please contact Carole Norville (386)314-4499 or Jennifer Santorelly (386)690-8557. Membership applications can also be picked up at one of our proud sponsors, American Aero Services, 333 South Street, New Smyrna Beach.

Another fund-raising project we are conducting is our “Walk of Honor” bricks. At our new facility, we will be installing a brick walk, with names of contributors. The bricks can be purchased for a cost of $100, with the name you would like inscribed on them. This is a wonderful way to be involved in the building of our museum brick-by-brick!

MUSEUM DESCRIPTION:

Timeless Wings and Wheels Military Museum will be a facility that will house and display aircraft, vehicles and memorabilia from both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam, with an emphasis on World War II in the New Smyrna/Daytona area. Our displays will be on a rotating basis, so every time you visit the museum there will be something different to see. Our plan includes a military vehicle diorama, which will feature vehicles from different decades. A 1940’s style house front built to scale and furnished with authentic items for that time period. A replica observation tower used by the Aircraft Warning Service, which was manned by citizens to track both friendly and enemy aircraft for the United States Government. Aircraft displays will also be on a rotating basis. Our future plans are to purchase aircraft for the museum that are in static and/or flying condition. Other displays will include personal collections from military veterans.

A monthly Calendar of Events will feature weekend flying events with clubs from around the state and country. We have contacted several who are very interested and would like to schedule a show. Also, on our calendar will be military vehicle shows, classic car shows, and motorcycle shows. We want to provide a place for our veterans to gather and talk, so a veteran’s luncheon or dinner will be a monthly event. Movie Night is also a favorite, where classic movies are shown on the hangar doors.

Timeless Wings and Wheels will also be associated with the schools in the area to provide them with a learning environment for veteran and military history. Our goal is to provide visitors and students with the knowledge of history they cannot get by just reading their textbooks. We want to make their visit to the museum a total immersion experience. The visitor will be a part of the displays and will in turn understand how life was at that time.

The museum will provide a positive economic impact on New Smyrna Beach, by providing an attraction that we do not have in our area. By hosting our planned events, the participants that fly-in or drive-in will be spending the weekend. They will be staying, eating and purchasing in our community. For each event we host, each participant will receive a packet that provides information about the area with guides on accommodations and restaurants.

Timeless Wings and Wheels Museum will be a place where, residents, students, and out-of-town visitors can come to learn about history, enjoy activities of years-gone-by, socialize and enjoy the charm of watching New Smyrna’s sunset from the tarmac of the museum.
