TIMELESS WINGS & WHEELS NEWSLETTER

Volume One, Number Two, April 8, 2008

Letter From The Homefront

What a whirlwind the last one-and-a-half months has been!  From our Membership Kickoff on February 16th through our “Night with the Corsair” on March 22nd, we have been working hard to make each a success.  Our hard work and our wonderful members have come through!  I am very pleased to announce that we have 55 members as of the writing of this second newsletter.  We are very excited with the overwhelming interest in the creation of our museum!

In this issue, you will find a volunteer spotlight, which will highlight one of our volunteers.  There is  a section on what our members are doing,  and an update on our acquisition of the hangar that will house Timeless Wings and Wheels.  You will find a review of Corsair Night and what is coming up in the months ahead.

You can also read about our volunteer meeting and how you can help the museum grow.  We hope you are enjoying  the newsletter and if you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Here’s hoping the next month will be as exciting as the last month has been, until then….

With great respect,

Carole Norville

If You Build It, They Will Come….

Or so the movie line goes!  We have currently had several informal talks with the owner of the hangar we would like to move into, Greg Arnett.  He has made us a very reasonable offer, and we are  currently seeking a building sponsor.  American Aero

Services has expressed interest in purchasing the building and allowing Timeless Wings and Wheels to house the museum in the building.  This would be a very suitable arrangement since American Aero, Gary and the guys, are the largest supporters we have at the museum.    Our goal is to be in our own facility by Fall of 2008.

Membership Update

Memberships have taken flight this month.  The museum now has 55 dedicated members in various membership categories.  We have also added one Corporate Sponsor.  The Smyrna Motel became our first corporate sponsor.  Smyrna Motel has provided great accommodations to many of the bomber pilots over the years and we welcome them and appreciate their support.   We still have 45 more spots before our 100 Founding Member spots are taken.  If you have any friends or relatives

who would like to become part of the Founding Members please have them visit the website and  become members.

Volusia Honor Air

We recently had lunch with Bill Mancinik of Deland Breakfast Rotary Club.  Bill and his fellow Rotarians are organizing Volusia Honor Air.  Their goal is to send 100 veterans to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.  All their expenses will be paid by the donations that they have received.  They are working in conjunction with US Airways and many other corporate sponsors, but they still have not reached their goal.  Timeless Wings and Wheels was able to donate $100 to this worthwhile cause.  With our commitment to veterans, we felt this was a perfect organization to support.  We hope to work further with Mr. Mancinik to meet these veterans and possibly set up interviews for the Veteran’s History

Project for the Library of Congress.  For more information on Volusia Honor Air, please visit their website at www.volusiahonorair.org.

“Night With The Corsair”

The “Night With The Corsair”, was great fun for everyone!  The evening started off with Dale Snodgrass doing a demonstration flight with the Corsair.  He, as usual, put on a great show!  During dinner, we played a restoration video of the Corsair.  The video took the audience chronologically through the Corsair’s restorations, the first one and then the post-crash restoration.  The video was put together by Vince Santorelly and was made possible with the loan of video footage by Mike Frye and Kevin Breen.  The evening was then turned over to our guest speakers, Bill Donnelly and Dale Snodgrass for storytelling and questions and answers.  Judging from the audience participation, the crowd loved it!   The evening came to a close too soon.  We could have

stayed all night asking questions of these two very interesting men!  The website will be updated with pictures of this event.  Our commitment at the museum is to preserve our veteran’s history and you can be sure that this will be one of many events in the future.

Volunteer Meeting

Timeless Wings and Wheels is looking for a few good men and women!  Is there something you are good at, talking, meeting people, directing airplanes, painting, being creative or any other quality, we need your expertise.  We are having a Meet and Greet Volunteer Meeting on Thursday, April 24th at 6:30 p.m. at American Aero Services, 333 South Street.  Refreshments will be served.  We would like to find out what our members are good at, and if they would like to help at events and once the museum opens.  Come out and get acquainted with other members.  If you need more information, please give us a call.

Bi-Monthly Volunteer Spotlight

Timeless Wings and Wheels will be including in every issue of the newsletter, a volunteer spotlight.  This month it is Joan Mastrogiacomo!  Joan is the wife of Sam Mastrogiacomo, who was the first veteran to be interviewed by myself for the Veteran’s History Project.  Sam come out for all the Open Hangar Days at American Aero and sat with the B-24, however, he soon brought Joan who fast became a wonderful asset in many aspects.  Joan volunteered at our Kickoff Weekend for membership, she not only counted every person who visited the hangar that day, but she also sold hotdogs and shirts.  She was also a server and spaghetti cooker at the Corsair event on the 22nd of March.  Sam and Joan make their home in Edgewater in the winter and are presently trying to sell their home  the

in New Jersey, so they can live full-time in Florida.  Joan and Sam also volunteer once-a-week at the Drug Free Youth Thrift Store.  Our hats go off to Joan Mastrogiacomo and the great work she does for us and others!

What Our Members Are Doing

Members George and Virginia Baker hosted a T-34 Formation Weekend at their hangar at the New Smyrna Airport from April 4-8.  This 4-day event brings about 20-25 T-34 aircraft for clinics and workshops.  Ginny, being the wonderful hostess that she is, provided all the flyers with breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The Baker’s have been hosting this event for the past five years.  The experience and flying time is invaluable for the pilots that participate and George and Ginny get a lot of satisfaction from providing a place for them to gather.
